Collection Development Policy for Scarborough Library: Responsibility

Collection Development Policy

Responsibility for Collection Development

The Coordinator of Collection Development, supervised by the Dean of the Library and in collaboration with the Library faculty librarians, holds the general responsibility for maintaining the quality and balance of the library collection. Scarborough librarians actively participate in purchasing materials, proactively identifying specific items needed and acquiring them.

The Library actively encourages recommendations for materials and seeks faculty assistance in expanding the collection. Both full-time and adjunct faculty are encouraged to submit online requests for books and resources related to their disciplines.

In addition to fulfilling student requests, librarians also select resources for assignments and address cross-curricular needs, including reference materials and general research topics. To ensure the collection's quality and breadth, librarians consider various factors such as reviews from general and specialized sources, standard bibliographies, user requests, course syllabi, and reserve book lists.
