Welcome to the Maps Guide

This guide provides a brief introduction to the maps and atlases found in the Scarborough Library as well as other resources available for the research, creation and use of maps.

Where are the Atlases Now?

Many of the atlases that were on the ATLASES shelf in the Reference area have been moved to the OVERSIZE area on the 3rd floor (heading back to Rm 307). The volumes have then been placed in call number order.

For example, on the shelf, the call number for Atlas of the Moon by Antonio Rukl will appear in the catalog as

Shepherd University, Scarborough Library Oversize Quarto

G1000.3 .R813 2004

and on the book itself like this: q G1000.3.R813 2004

The lower case q is short for "quarto" which indicates that this book is larger than the ordinary bookshelves of the library. Volumes that are "quarto" or "folio" (which are large enough to need to be laid horizontally on shelves are part of the OVERSIZE materials.
