Finding Government documents

Scarborough Library's Federal Depository Library Collection

Scarborough Library is one of more than 1,150 libraries nationwide designated as a Federal Depository Library. Since 1813, depository libraries have provided free public access to federal government information. Scarborough Library has participated in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) since 1971. As a selective depository, we receive approximately 14% of the materials distributed through the program.

Users can search for government documents in the library’s online catalog. Most federal government documents are available online and can be accessed through DiscoveryGov, the Government Publishing Office’s (GPO) discovery search tool. Another useful resource is Core Documents of U.S. Democracy, which provides direct access to foundational federal government documents that define American democracy.

Location of Physical Government Documents

  • Print documents: Third floor, outside the West Virginia Room (Room 309)
  • Microfiche collection: Ground floor, compact storage area
  • Large government maps and posters: Main floor (map case)

Government documents in print and microfiche are arranged by the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system, which organizes materials by issuing agency rather than subject. For more information on SuDoc classification, see the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) Classification Scheme guide.
