Can I install apps?

  • Yes you can install Apps, but you must use your own Apple ID to do so.
  • If you do not have an Apple ID you can create one on the iPad.

I want to uninstall an app, how do I do this?

  • The library provides a iPad that is set up in such a way that personal data can be easily removed. Any app you install can only be uninstalled by a Library technician. All your apps will be uninstalled and personal data is removed when you return the iPad.

I want to check my email.

  • There are many options for checking your email on an iPad. Your email provider most likely has a app in the app store available for free. If not you can log into your email via the Safari web browser.

Will the next person who checks out the iPad have access to my information?

  • No. Any information on the iPad is wiped when the iPad is checked in. We have a process that makes it safe and convienent to check out iPads. We make sure to remove all personal information across all apps.

** Apple provides a lot of documentation to help out new users to iPads! Common problems that you may encounter can be answered here:

Setup AppleID

  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings, and then tap iTunes & App Stores.
  2. If an Apple ID is already signed in, tap the Apple ID name, and then tap Sign Out.
  3. Tap Create New Apple ID.
  4. Choose the appropriate store by tapping Store, and select the country in which you are located. Tap Done to confirm your selection, and then tap Next to proceed to the next screen.
  5. The next screen will display the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions. You can opt to have the Terms and Conditions emailed to you for easier reading by tapping Send by Email. To do this, enter your valid email address, and then tap Send.
  6. To agree to the Terms and Conditions, tap the Agree button which is located on the bottom-right of the page. Tap Agree again when the confirmation appears.
  7. Once you've agreed to the terms and conditions, you'll need to enter an email address, password, and choose three security questions and provide answers to them.
  8. The email address you provide will be your new Apple ID (which is what you will use to log in to the iTunes Store). Enter your email address, and then tap Next.
  9. You can also enter an optional rescue email address. Providing a rescue email address is recommended. Learn more about the rescue email address.
  10. The email address you provide will be your new Apple ID (which is what you will use to log in to the iTunes Store). Enter your email address, and then tap Next.

Tip: If you are trying to create an account using an existing Apple ID, like your iCloud email address, you will receive a prompt telling you that your email address is already an Apple ID. Simply tap Continue, and then tap Use Existing Account on the following screen.
  11. Next, you'll be required to enter your billing information. To choose a different Credit Card type, tap one of the available options, and then tap Done. You will not be charged until you make a purchase.
  12. Once you've filled out all of the fields for your billing information, tap Next.

iOS 10

Apple updated it's operating system, and with it comes a lot of new changes! Currently, only the library's iPad minis are capable of running iOS 10 - request one at the front desk!

  • Control Center: Control Center has been updated! Still accessible in the same way (swiping upwards from the bottom), but with a fun new panel feature that divides it into three boxes: HomeKit, Media, and the traditional Main Control Center Panel.

  • Widgets: Swipe to the left from the home screen, and you will be treated to a full-screen display of the widgets available on your device!
Apple's own widgets are pretty good, but if you really want a useful widgets screen, you'll want to install some third-party widgets from the App Store. Here's the default Apple screen:
  • Siri: New improvements to Siri in iOS10 allow for more natural speaking patterns! She also has a greater compatibility of working with third party applications, such as MapMyRun and Pinterest.
  • Home App: An app has finally been distributed by Apple that ties together all of your IoT devices in a single place! Connect to adjust your IoT thermostat, blinds, lights - even view your home security cameras quickly from the lock screen!
  • Safari: For iPad users, there is a new split screen viewer available for Safari that allows you to view two separate windows at once! In addition, you are now capable of opening an unlimited number of tabs in the app - as opposed to previous iOS's 36 tab limit.
  • Proactive Screen: Swipe left from the lock screen or home screen, and you will see a two-column area that allows you to customize which widgets you would like to see and quickly access Spotlight Search!
